Weekend DIY Projects Around The House

Thursday, January 6, 2022 @ 9:45 AM

If the start of 2022 is anything to go by, with the rapid increase in COVID-19 cases due to the Omricon variant, it seems like yet another year is going to go by with spending much more time at home, especially during the winter.

The upside of being holed up is finally having the opportunity to dedicate time to DIY projects around the home that you may have been procrastinating with. Whether you’ve focused on storage space, organization, or just a somewhat lacklustre apartment design that needs upgrading - updating your home into a haven is such a rewarding process!

Here are some cool ideas on what you can do around the house this winter:

  1. A New Coat of Paint for the Master Bedroom

Bored of waking up every day to the same dread wall colour? A fresh coat of paint is one of the most effective, economical and fastest way to achieve an immediate and impressive change in a room’s look and feel. Learning the skill of painting is an essential part of being a homeowner for any burgeoning DIYer. Also, the great thing about painting a room is that if you don’t like the finished product, you can simply repaint it. If you don’t already have the equipment, all one needs is a roller and pan, trim brush and clean-up equipment.

  1. Build Your Own Mini Greenhouse or Herb Garden

Whether you have a small condo or a townhouse with a small backyard,  building your very own mini greenhouse within small spaces is not only a relaxing hobby, it’s also a great way to provide nutrition for yourself and your family. Indoor plants give out fresh oxygen, hence purifying the air within your space.

There are loads of local retailers that stock mini greenhouse kits such as Canadian Tire,  Lowes, Wayfair, etc.  However, if you want something unique, there are few good online stores such as Etsy, that not only stock practical but also aesthetically-pleasing mini greenhouse kits.

  1. Brighten Your Kitchen

Dress up an eating area with a fresh light fixture. Replacing an existing fixture is your easiest option: Just turn off the power at the breaker box and connect the wires. Hanging a new light fixture is a simple way to change the look of your room, and it's a project you can do yourself. Consider the design, as well as function, when choosing the right light fixtures for your kitchen.

  1. Fill a Blank Wall with DIY Decor

DIY home decorations do not only add character to your home and are a budget-friendly way to freshen up your space but also add your personality to the room/home. Whether you choose to display some of your own artwork, hang a woven tapestry you’ve made, or simply hang items you already have for storage and decor, this will certainly spruce up any space. One such example is to gather a bunch of mismatched plates, paint them a variety of colours in the same hue, then hang them together to create an eye-catching wall display.

  1. Extreme Makeover of Used Furniture

If the adage “old is gold” is anything to go by, then giving your old furniture an uplift, will make a huge difference to your interior decor. Old furniture often has great “bones” or nice detail, and simply re-upholstering it can give it a second life. It’s pretty easy to recover a basic chair seat. Measure the cushion to determine the amount of fabric needed; be sure to allow a few inches all around to fold over the bottom of the seat.  Cut the fabric to fit. Fold it over the seat and use a staple gun to attach it to the seat’s underside. Stretch it taut and do all sides. Angle the fabric around the corners before stapling. Then reattach to the chair and you have a fresh look.
